Olympic ski icon Lindsey Vonnhas disclosed that she is aiming for a significant recovery goal this yearMet Galaafter her severe leg injury.

The gold medalist from 2010 intends to take her initial steps without the use of crutches at the grand event on Monday evening, just under three months following her severe accident in Italy.

Vonn, 41, suffered several breaks and encountered the risk of losing a limb following a loss of control in the women’s downhill competition at the 2026 Winter Games.Olympics.

Following the accident, the alpine skier has had eight operations and has needed to rely on a wheelchair and crutches for all recent public events.

However, Vonn told CNN News Centralthat she has made the Met Gala steps the ‘light at the end of the tunnel’ in her recovery.

There are some steps. Yes, it’s going to be tough,” she said to the publication. “I was thinking, can I handle this? Can I handle this? [But] Thom Browne approached me a long time ago.

“It’s been the thing that I’ve been thinking: Can I make it? You know, it’s been the light at the end of the tunnel. I’m going to try to keep going,” Vonn said.

It’s meant to be my first day trying to walk a bit without using crutches. So, from the beginning to the top of the stairs, if I can manage it without crutches, that would be a major achievement.

A 41-year-old athlete has undergone eight operations following a severe left leg fracture — a condition that almost resulted in the loss of her leg — during a women’s downhill skiing competition on February 8. She requires at least one more surgery to fix a torn ACL in the same knee.

Vonn also acknowledged that she remains in ‘survival mode’ while undergoing rehabilitation following the shocking accident at the Winter Olympics.

“You know, I believe you need to be thoughtful. And I haven’t truly been able to do that yet, as I’m still in survival mode,” she said to CNN.

I’m still struggling to get through it. I’ve attempted to begin therapy with my therapist, but I just haven’t been able to reach that point yet. There will be something to learn from this. And, you know, I always try to focus on the good in every situation.

Perhaps this will turn out to be the greatest event in my life. Perhaps a door will open that would otherwise remain closed to me.

Though this is terrible and difficult, I don’t know where the future will lead me. I’m just going with the flow.

Vonn’s latest update arrives just a few days after shesuggested that she might overcome the challenges and return to racing even though her father encouraged her to quit skiing.

“My father acted too quickly. He should know by now that if you tell me not to do something, I’ll definitely do it,” she mentioned during a segment on CBS Mornings.

I want to ski even if I’m not competing,” Vonn then said. “I love the mountains, that has always been my passion.

She has previously come back from various injuries – she has a titanium implant in her right knee – but this time was different. The pain felt different. The eight surgeries are just one less than the total she had for all previous injuries combined.
