New Academy regulations state that AI actors will not be eligible for Oscar awards, alongside changes to the international film category and acting nominations.

Artificial intelligence-generated actors will not be considered for an Oscar, according to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which announced new guidelines for the awards on Friday.

The regulatory authority of theOscar Awardsemphasized that acting performances and screenplays should be developed by humans, while permitting the utilization of artificial intelligence technologies.

The updated regulations mainly focus on:

Actors generated by AI Screenplays composed with the help of AI International films category Numerous nominations for actors within the same category

Actors created using AI

According to the Academy, under the new rules, only roles “clearly carried out by humans with their permission” will qualify for acting honors, essentially removing AI-created actors from consideration.

The updated regulations would prevent AI-created “actress” Tilly Norwood, who made her debut last year, from being included.

The choice comes after the release of an AI-created version of Val Kilmer, a year following his passing. A digital, younger Kilmer was featured in the trailer for “As Deep as the Grave,” generated using old footage with the backing of his family.

Screenplays written using AI

As per the Academy, scripts need to be fully “created by humans to qualify.”

The board stated that AI tools would “have no impact” on a film’s success but highlighted that human creative input should stay essential.

The development occurs as increasing worries about generative AI have emerged, a major topic during the 2023 Hollywood strikes.

The Academy mentioned it could ask for more details from directors to confirm whether the entries were made by humans.

International films category

Making important updates to the international feature category, movies can now be eligible not just through national entries but also by securing top honors at prominent festivals such as Cannes, Berlin, and Busan,Veniceor Toronto, the Academy stated.

Until this year, only movies selected by official national organizations were eligible for submission, a challenge forkey publications from totalitarian regimes.

Starting from now, according to the new regulation, the film will be considered the nominee instead of its country, the Academy stated. The film’s director will be “mentioned on the plaque of the trophy” together with the country, where relevant.

Numerous actor nominations within the same category

In performance categories, actors will now be eligible for multiple nominations in the same category for various roles.

Previously, an actor was not eligible for multiple nominations within the same category for performances in various movies, even though this was permitted in other Oscar categories.

The modifications will take effect for the 99th Academy Awards, set to occur in March 2027.
