TOKYO – On Saturday, roads, train stations, and airports in Japan experienced heavy traffic as individuals traveled to their hometowns or embarked on domestic and international vacations, marking the beginning of a five-day Golden Week holiday period.

The most crowded holiday period in Japan, aside from New Year and Obon in the summer, is Golden Week, which begins in late April, with Saturday signaling the second half that includes four straight national holidays.

At JR Tokyo Station, a family from Chiba Prefecture mentioned they were planning to visit Kyoto and Nara prefectures in western Japan.

“I wish to feed the deer,” said Nanami Sotozaki, aged 4, apparently mentioning the crackers that visitors offer to the wild deer in Nara.

At JR Shin-Osaka Station, train employees were actively assisting passengers close to the ticket barriers, as individuals inside the station complex queued up to purchase memorabilia.

“I’m really looking forward to visiting the locations from the TV drama with my boyfriend,” said Honoka Hamasaki, a 28-year-old from a city in western Japan, as she made her way to Yamanashi Prefecture.

JR East reported that powerful winds and a fallen tree are causing disruptions on the Yamagata Shinkansen Line between Tokyo and Shinjo Station in Yamagata Prefecture.
