Cho Kyoung-tae, a member of the People Power Party and part of the reformist group (Busan Sahagu-eul, six-term), had a confrontation on the 2nd with supporters who were cheering for People Power Party leader Jang Dong-hyeok during the opening event of Park Heong-joon’s Busan mayoral campaign office. Attendees included People Power Party leader Jang Dong-hyeok, Song Eon-seog, the floor leader, other party officials, and honorary campaign chairman Kim Moon-soo.

Rep. Cho stepped up to give a celebratory address at the gathering. All of a sudden, loud cries and demonstrations began from one area.

In reply, Rep. Cho remarked, “Please stay calm,” and continued, “The emergency martial law was incorrect.” With cries of dissent emerging, he said, “You can make your own judgment,” and then yelled, “Because of people like you, the People Power Party is struggling.”

Demonstrations targeting Rep. Cho persisted. He once again asked them to “remain silent,” yet the noise continued. He then set down the microphone and moved toward the people shouting before returning to the podium to remark, “This is truly frustrating.”

Rep. Cho continued with his address. He inquired, “Dear residents of Busan, who has the greatest love for Busan?” and mentioned, “Candidate for mayor Park Heong-joon demonstrates great affection and devotion towards Busan.” He further said, “I hope we can all follow the wonderful path, the road of loving Busan, that candidate Park Heong-joon is traveling.”

As Rep. Cho tried to proceed, the demonstrators started shouting “Jang Dong-hyeok.” In reaction, Rep. Cho stated, “Those calling for People Power Party leader Jang Dong-hyeok should return home immediately. This is a campaign for Park Heong-joon, the mayoral candidate.” Further intense protests occurred. Rep. Cho then concluded his speech without additional conflict with the leader’s supporters.
