Addis Ababa, May 5, 2026 (ENA) — President Taye Atske Selassie stated that current patriotism must be demonstrated by actively participating in national development and leading the process of modernization, as the nation celebrated the 85th Patriots’ Victory Day.

The 85th Anniversary of Victory was marked by a grand ceremony at the Patriots’ Victory Monument Square (Arat Kilo) in Addis Ababa, which drew participation from high-ranking government officials, foreign diplomats, and citizens.

At the gathering, President Taye remarked that the day marks a significant victory against fascism and Nazism, offering his congratulations to the nation’s citizens and to the patriots who preserved the country’s independence through their sacrifices.

He observed that the yearly remembrance highlights the perseverance and resolute fight of patriots, who, with minimal resources and simple arms, overcame a highly equipped foreign army.

As stated by the President, this triumph showcased the strength of unity to the international community and protected the nation’s independence on the world stage.

The President also highlighted that the triumph established a solid base to stop the return of fascist ideas, while stressing that the heritage from patriots consists of peace, freedom, and self-assurance.

Calling patriotism a lasting national value, Taye stated that the historic win still acts as a strong base for success and a wellspring of optimism for what lies ahead.

He emphasized that each citizen bears a duty to contribute to the nation with knowledge and vision, pointing out that the people’s ambitions focus on progress, advancement, and modernization.

The President remarked, ‘Today’s patriotism involves being a driver of progress and a pioneer in modernization,’ encouraging citizens to pay tribute to the efforts of previous generations by striving for a more improved and affluent country.

Ethiopia observes Patriots’ Victory Day each year to celebrate the bravery and dedication of individuals who fought against foreign domination and protected the nation’s sovereignty.
