May 8, 2026 (PORT SUDAN) — A total of 166 Sudanese individuals landed at Port Sudan International Airport from Tripoli, the capital of Libya, on Friday, as part of a self-initiated repatriation initiative for Sudanese citizens living overseas.

The arrival signifies the second stage of a initiative to bring back around 1,000 nationals through six planned flights.

The arrival of Sudanese individuals in Libya has hit new highs following the start of hostilities in April 2023. As per a report from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), it is estimated that over 550,000 Sudanese refugees have arrived in Libya since the conflict started.

The organization stated that roughly 559,920 people have entered the North African country, but determining an exact number is challenging because of the unpredictable nature of entry points along Libya’s large, isolated borders with Sudan, Chad, and Egypt. Numerous refugees head to coastal cities following their crossing, frequently encountering significant difficulties in obtaining public healthcare and experiencing extensive psychological stress caused by the ongoing instability.

Idris Saleh Idris Mohamed, the head of the Secretariat for Sudanese Working Abroad (SSWA) in Red Sea State, stated that the organization is ready to welcome the remaining flights anticipated in the upcoming days. He mentioned that a further group is set to arrive on Saturday.

Mohamed mentioned that the SSWA is managing the transportation of returnees to their respective home areas. He noted that actions are being taken to guarantee that those traveling to Khartoum and Gezira states arrive at their locations securely.
