LAGOSThe Nigeria Standards Organisation (SON) has reemphasized its dedication to employing precise and dependable measurement systems in order to aid the country’s economic and industrial development.

Dr. Ifeanyi Okeke, the head of SON, revealed this during a press event marking World Metrology Day 2026, emphasizing that measurement standards play a crucial role in industrial growth, safeguarding consumers, ensuring equitable trade, and fostering innovation.

Dr. Okeke stated that metrology, the study of measurement, forms the basis for trust in products, services, market activities, and governmental policies. He mentioned that accurate measurements assist industries in adhering to necessary standards, enhance product quality, minimize trade conflicts, and boost consumer assurance.

He revealed that leaders from various sectors, including industry captains, government officials, creators, small and medium enterprise managers, and business proprietors, will convene at the C Event Centre in Abuja on May 20 to explore the impact of measurements on fostering economic growth.

He stated that precise and verifiable measurements are essential for national competitiveness, as they allow Nigerian products and services to comply with both local and global standards.

The head of the SON stated that the organization is enhancing its measurement systems and working with appropriate national and international entities to foster equity, openness, and trust within critical areas of the economy.

The International Day of Metrology is observed worldwide on May 20th to emphasize the significance of measurement science in daily activities, commerce, government operations, and environmental sustainability.

The 2026 theme, “Metrology: Establishing Confidence in Policy Development,” highlights the importance of accurate measurement in making informed decisions.
