The Ministry of Interior and Safety stated on the 24th that the total number of voters for the upcoming June 3 local elections has been confirmed as 44,649,908. This represents a rise of 346,459 compared to the 8th local elections in 2022 and an increase of 258,037 from last year’s 21st presidential election.

Out of the total voters, 44,409,225 were citizens of South Korea, 89,151 were overseas residents, and 151,532 were non-citizens. Significantly, the count of foreign voters has risen 3.13 times in the last ten years, up from 48,248 in the 6th local elections held in 2014.

According to the Public Official Election Act, non-citizens who are 18 years or older, have held permanent residency for three years, and are listed in the local government’s foreigner registration system are qualified to cast their vote in municipal elections.

According to age groups, individuals in their 50s made up the biggest share with 8,636,772 (19.34%), followed by those in their 60s with 8,008,122 (17.94%), those in their 40s with 7,544,332 (16.90%), and those aged 70 or above with 7,225,683 (16.18%). Regarding gender, women represented 22,553,936 (50.51%), surpassing men who numbered 22,095,972 (49.49%).

In terms of region, Gyeonggi Province had the largest number of voters, totaling 11,878,997 (26.60%), followed by Seoul with 8,319,134 (18.63%) and Busan with 2,857,335 (6.40%). The smallest figure was recorded in Sejong, with 309,134 voters (0.69%).

The by-elections for National Assembly representatives, conducted alongside the local elections, will occur in 14 districts. The overall voter count for these by-elections reached 2,631,866, with Daegu Daeseong recording the highest number at 252,539 and Busan Buk-gap the lowest at 129,192.

Early voting is scheduled to occur between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. on the 29th and 30th. Voters may verify their registration details and find out where their polling station is located by visiting the websites of local city, county, or district offices or by using information provided in mailed guides.
