On the 24th, President Lee Jae Myung referenced specific instances of people ridiculing former President Roh Moo-hyun and mentioned that he would direct a cabinet meeting to examine actions to penalize such behavior.

The president shared a news report on X today, asserting that on the 23rd, at Bongha Village where a memorial ceremony for former President Roh took place, there were instances of disrespect towards the former leader. The article mentioned that people believed to be members of the online platform ‘Ilbe, Daily Best Storage’ took pictures next to the statue of former President Roh in Bongha Village while making a hand sign associated with Ilbe, thus mocking and insulting the former president. The former president participated in the memorial event held in Bongha Village.

The president stated on this day, “There are conflicting perspectives: one suggesting that such mockery and insults, which foster social division and conflict like those seen in Ilbe, should be safeguarded under freedom of expression, while the other argues that sanctions and penalties are essential,” and further noted, “There was also debate regarding the closure of Ilbe.”

The president added, “It is essential to openly address and genuinely examine implementing measures such as penalties and punitive damages for mocking and hate speech under strict circumstances, shutting down sites that ignore or encourage mockery and hatred like Ilbe, along with imposing punitive damages and fines,” and mentioned, “I will direct the Cabinet meeting accordingly.”

The president recently expressed disapproval of Starbucks, which organized a promotional event called ‘Tank Day’ on May 18th, saying, “I am furious about the inhumane and despicable actions of these substandard businesses,” and further noted, “Moral, administrative, legal, and political responsibilities should be enforced.” A representative from Cheong Wa Dae mentioned, “The president is determined to eliminate historical distortion and blasphemy committed by individuals believed to hold far-right views.”
