North Korean media stated on the 24th that the Naegohyang Women’s FC claimed victory in the final of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Women’s Champions League (AWCL) the day before. Nevertheless, they omitted to note that the game took place at Suwon Sports Complex in Gyeonggi Province.
The Korean Central News Agency covered the 2025-2026 AFC AWCL final on that day, noting, “The championship game between our nation’s Naegohyang squad and Japan’s Tokyo Verdy Bellaeza team occurred on the 23rd,” and “In the match that decides Asia’s premier women’s football (club) team, our players triumphed over the Japanese side with a score of 1:0.” The agency further stated, “During the award ceremony, the trophy and gold medals were presented to the members of our country’s Naegohyang team, who secured first place in the 2025-2026 Asian Football Confederation Women’s Champions League, and the Most Valuable Player honor was bestowed upon player Kim Kyung-Young.”
Previously, when covering the semifinal match between Naegohyang and Suwon FC Women on the 20th, the agency said, “The semifinal game between our nation’s Naegohyang team and South Korea’s Suwon team occurred in South Korea on the 20th,” specifying the host nation but not the location. North Korean media made no reference to the support activities by the inter-Korean joint cheering group organized by South Korean civilian groups on the 20th and the 24th.
The announcement of the North Korean women’s football team’s win was also featured in Rodong Sinmun, a publication commonly read by North Koreans. Rodong Sinmun covered the Naegohyang team’s success on page 3, omitting details about the match location or the South Korean supporters. The newspaper noted, “The remarkable accomplishments of the Naegohyang women’s football players, who have adhered to the decisions of the Party’s 9th Congress, are inspiring a winning spirit and significant motivation among all citizens of our great nation as they continue to drive forward the era of widespread prosperity.”
The newspaper also released images depicting Naegohyang players celebrating by holding up the trophy during the award ceremony, posing for photos with the national flag following the event, Kim Kyung-Young reveling after scoring a goal, and her being presented the tournament’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) honor.
