The presidential hopeful from the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has begun diplomatic discussions with South African authorities concerning increasing xenophobic incidents targeting Nigerians in the nation.

Obi, who arrived in South Africa on Friday for an international conference, took the chance to meet with Nigerians in Cape Town to gather direct insights into the issues they are facing.

In a statement shared on hisX accountOn Saturday, Obi revealed that he later met with three South African ministers and political party officials to discuss topics related to immigration, regional collaboration, and harmonious relations between the citizens of both nations.

Obi mentioned: “Following my conversation with Nigerians in Cape Town yesterday, I had productive talks this morning with three South African ministers and political figures about the current matters involving immigration, regional cooperation, and fostering harmonious relations between our countries.”

He mentioned that the talks focused on “the urgent matters affecting both nations — particularly those related to migration, economic struggles, youth unemployment, security problems, and the increasing tensions experienced by African foreigners in South Africa.”

The ex-governor of Anambra State emphasized that Nigeria and South Africa should enhance collaboration and maintain communication to reinforce their ties and protect the rights and honor of Africans throughout the continent.

Obi stated, ‘I am firmly convinced that Nigeria and South Africa, two major countries on the continent, should strengthen communication, boost collaboration, and seek resolutions based on justice, mutual respect, and commitment to the rule of law.’

He also called on leaders and people from both nations to refrain from violence, hatred, and incitement, emphasizing that conflicts should be settled via constitutional and democratic methods.

“In these challenging times, both leaders and citizens must demonstrate responsible leadership, display empathy, and practice self-control,” he said.

We all highlighted the necessity of following the law, the significance of refraining from violence, opposing hatred or incitement, and letting legal organizations address disputes through democratic and constitutional methods, irrespective of the difficulties we face.

Obi also emphasized the significance of African unity and economic integration, stating that the continent’s future relies on collaboration and acknowledgment of human dignity.

He further stated, ‘The future of Africa depends on our ability to encourage solidarity, support economic fairness, invest in our communities, and maintain the respect of every African, no matter where they are located.’
