Njombe. Authorities in the Njombe Region have detained a local from Kiwe village, located in Mawengi Ward, Ludewa District, named Mr. Kalisto Haule (34), under suspicion of murdering the village’s executive officer, Mr. Peter Ng’ingo (52).
The individual is charged with murdering the village executive officer (VEO) by stabbing him with a machete, after claims that he had been repeatedly penalized for selling firewood and charcoal.
The event was verified on Saturday, May 23, 2026, by Njombe Regional Police Commander Mahamoud Banga, during a statement to reporters in the area.
He mentioned that the event took place on Friday, May 22, around 4:30am in the Wecha hamlet, Kiwe village, located in Ludewa District.
“The reason behind this incident is the suspect taking the law into his own hands, but it was driven by repeated penalties imposed on him by the village executive officer because of his actions of cutting trees for firewood and producing charcoal,” stated RPC Banga.
He mentioned that the deceased, who acted as the village executive officer, had been calling the suspect to the office along with the village chairman and imposing penalties following the discovery of his actions.
The RPC stated that prior to committing the offense, the suspect initially visited the home of the hamlet chairperson but was unable to locate him. Instead, he encountered the chairperson’s wife, whom he assaulted by striking her on the back with a machete. After this, he went to the residence of the village executive officer, broke into the door, and carried out the murder.
Following his visit to Kiwe village on May 22, 2026, to express sympathy to the grieving family, relatives, and community members, Ludewa District Commissioner, Mr. Olivanus Thomas, stated that the suspect had been taken into custody by the police for additional legal actions.
He mentioned that the event had caused the deceased’s family to experience profound sorrow, especially his children who relied on their father for guidance and assistance.
“Currently, the task of raising the children has been placed solely on the mother, which is distressing for the whole community,” stated the DC.
He called on parents and caregivers to provide appropriate guidance for children and to teach them moral principles and reverence for God, aiming to decrease instances of violence in the community.
Mr. Thomas also urged locals to return to their religion and uphold social harmony to avoid similar occurrences, stating that such actions harm the reputation of Ludewa District.
