May 22, Khartoum —The Sudanese Mineral Resources Company announced on Friday that it has sent a technical team to examine the deaths of over 20 sheep in River Nile state, where the animals consumed water from processing pools polluted with chemicals utilized in small-scale gold mining.
The company mentioned in a statement that the incident happened in a region where unauthorized small-scale mining and processing operations are occurring, which go against established environmental and technical guidelines. The water is believed to be polluted with cyanide and thiourea — substances typically utilized in gold extraction processes.
It promised to inform the public about all aspects of the incident once the on-site investigation is finished, and urged everyone involved in the mining industry to strictly follow environmental and technical standards and to refrain from dealing with chemicals through unofficial channels.
