A key political organization on the front lines in Akwa Ibom State, the Uyo Liberation Movement (ULM), has expressed concern about a scheme involving government officials and members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to impose their allies and fraudsters as contenders in rival parties.
As per a statement from its secretary general, Prince Emmanuel Sam, the group claimed the plot was an element of the APC’s plan to block real opposition in the 2027 Uyo State Constituency election, noting that the tactic exposed the increasing desperation among APC supporters.
Following our previous meeting, where it was firmly decided that the current zoning arrangement for the Uyo State Constituency seat must be strictly upheld before the 2027 election, we would like to stress further that ULM is actively engaging with all opposition political parties to ensure that only authentic candidates from the Offot Ukwa Clan are approved to take part in their respective primary elections.
Strangely, individuals who are currently making great efforts to undermine the zoning system that has served as a symbol of unity in Uyo were previously its most vocal supporters.
To avoid any ambiguity, from 1999 to 2027, the State House of Assembly seat in Uyo has been rotated among the four clans as follows: Oku Clan – two times; Etoi Clan – two times; Ikono Clan – two times, and Offot Ukwa Clan – one time. The detailed information is provided below; 1999 – 2003 – Hon. Bar. Aniedi Ndem (Oku Clan); 2003 – 2007 – Hon. Elder Archibong Inyang (Etoi Clan); 2007 – 2011 – Hon. Ekere Affia (Ikono Clan); 2011 – 2025 – Hon. Edwin Joseph (Offot Ukwa Clan); 2015 – 2019 – Hon. Monday Eyo (Oku Clan); 2019 – 2023 – Rt. Hon. Anietie Eka (Etoi Clan); 2023 – 2027 – Hon. Uwemedimo Asuquo (Ikono Clan).
The aforementioned analysis clearly highlights three key points; first, that Uyo has continued with a single term system for 28 years. Secondly, that the rotation of the State House of Assembly seat among the four clans follows a distinct pattern, namely Oku Clan -> Etoi Clan -> Ikono Clan -> Offot Ukwa Clan. Thirdly, that the Offot Ukwa Clan has not yet held the seat for a second time, unlike the other clans.
Consequently, the present effort to disturb this setup that has promoted peace and harmony in Uyo should be firmly opposed by all sincere residents of Uyo.
This declaration serves to notify all opposing political parties and encourages them to remain resolute in their pursuit of justice. In the same vein, we praise the Labour Party National Screening Committee for rejecting a particular Emmanuel Friday Ben, who is recognized as a supporter of an APC member in Akwa Ibom State.
“Considering the irreversible harm the APC-led government has inflicted on opposition parties at the national level, we urge opposition parties in Akwa Ibom to act proactively to avoid suffering the same fate, in the interest of democracy,” the group stated.
