A young Englishman was killed while serving in combat inUkraineonly days prior to his scheduled receipt of a valor award.
A 23-year-old man named Ayrton Redfearn passed away in the Donetsk area on May 9, following his involvement with a specialized group aiding the Ukrainian military in 2025.
A representative from the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) stated: ‘We are assisting the family of a British citizen who passed away in Ukraine, and we are communicating with the Ukrainian officials.’
His mother, who identified herself as Natasha, said theBBCshe was terrified that the police would arrive at my door with distressing news.
“This fear turned into reality on the evening of May 11, and the world of mine, along with Ayrton’s 10-year-old brother, collapsed,” she stated.
Mr. Redfearn, hailing from Devon, was part of the Torquay Air Cadets during his childhood, and at the age of 17, he joined theRAF before travelling overseas.
His mother said, “We are striving to possess just 1 percent of Ayrton’s strength, bravery, and courage, and if we manage to do so, it will assist us in eventually accepting our life without him.”
I deeply appreciate all the tributes, messages, and support received from people who knew Ayrton and from strangers.

The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office alerts that UK citizens involved in combat in Ukraine are at significant risk of abuse.
Its website states: “British citizens involved in combat in Ukraine have been killed or taken prisoner. British nationals engaged in humanitarian activities have also been detained by Russian authorities.”
The danger to life, or the possibility of abuse, is significant.
At the beginning of the war in 2022, Ukrainian officials stated that over 20,000 individuals from 52 nations arrived to support the country.
Ever since, the count of international combatants within Ukraine’s armed forces has remained confidential.
The unfortunate passing of Mr. Redfearn occurs several months following the death of a British paratrooper while on duty in Ukraine.
Corporal George Hooley, 28, from the Parachute Regiment, passed away in a ‘tragic incident’ while watching the evaluation of a new defensive system in a conflict-ridden nation last December.

The Department of Defense shared an image of the deceased soldier along with a moving tribute that referred to L/Cpl Hooley, who was set to be promoted in the coming month, as ‘outstanding’.
In their statement, the government agency clarified that the incident occurred outside the active combat zones where Ukraine is resisting the Russian invasion.
In a heartfelt tribute to the deceased paratrooper, they stated: ‘Lance Corporal Hooley was an outstanding soldier, and due to his achievements and promise, he was set to [be promoted] to Corporal in January 2026.’
Therefore, he was given the duties of a Corporal during this, his most recent, assignment.
We are thinking of his family, friends, and those in The Parachute Regiment during this very challenging period.
