Conservative writer Nick Catoggio tells the Dispatchthe aftermath of the Texas Republican primary is entirely related to the party’s descent into a mere cult.

“Regular readers are aware of my theory regarding why Republican voters are now determined to remove incumbents in primaries: They’re in their Jonestown phase,” said Catoggio. “Disheartened by Trump’s economic shortcomings yet emotionally incapable of holding him (or themselves) responsible, they are dealing with this by becoming more radically cult-like and attacking dissenters like [Texas incumbent Sen. John]Cornyn, Thomas Massie, and Bill Cassidy instead. Certainly, conditions in America may get better if the president encounters evenless resistance inside the GOP.”

But “the truth is that Republican voters favored Paxton because he’s a bad guy,” says Catoggio. “Trumpism is a corrupted anti-morality that sees sociopathy as a political strength, as it’s characterized by ruthless, amoral determination in pursuing personal goals. The opponent in this race embodied that perfectly. The current officeholder, a more honorable person, clearly did not. They supported Paxton because he’s a bad guy, not despite it. That made it confusing why Cornyn decided to run on… how much of a bad guy Paxton is.”

During the final stage of the campaign, Catoggio states that Cornyn was asserting that Paxton had “escaped consequences for a long time and wasn’t held responsible for his actions, but I believe he is a disgrace, due to his inappropriate behavior. He shows no remorse at all. … This has encouraged him to become so bold that he’s now acting recklessly, and it has led him to self-destruction, particularly concerning his own family.”

However, despite everything, on the night of his defeat, Cornyn stated: “I have always backed the Republican candidate, and I plan to do so again in this general election.”

He plans to back a candidate led by someone he spent the past year correctly referring to as a scumbag?” Catoggio stated. “… Some could see John Cornyn’s declaration of political loyalty during severe criticism from his party as moving. I consider it sad.

Cornyn “spent the whole primary arguing that strong character is important, yet quickly changed his mind if there’s a Democrat across the ballot,” said Catoggio. “That’s 10 years of Republican politics in one sentence.”

Therefore, Republicans are heading towards the November election with Paxton, but Catoggio mentioned that Trump still possesses charm, whereas Paxton “offers all the same moral drawbacks without any of the positive appeal. He would be a terrible representation for the party in the Senate, particularly once scandals start accumulating.”

Catoggio stated he can also “nearly assure” that Paxton, Trump, and Texas’ Republican administration will attempt to invalidate the outcome if Democratic candidate James Talarico wins a close contest, but that’s what Republican voters “are choosing to support by voting for Paxton this fall — another painful, nation-harming, self-centered ‘rigged election’ myth.”

There is no end to this candidacy or to this party, and it’s high time for good-hearted individuals to stop acting like that, even if John Cornyn can’t,” said Catoggio. “You’re aboard the Ship of Theseus. The lifeboat is ready.
