Addis Ababa, May 27, 2026 — Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed officially opened the newly constructed Negele Borena Geda Airport today, marking a significant move in enhancing Ethiopia’s internal air transport system and improving regional links.

The recently opened airport marks Ethiopian Airlines’ 24th domestic location and is anticipated to have a major impact on enhancing trade, tourism, and economic unity in the southern region of the country.

At the opening ceremony, the Prime Minister stated that the new airport was constructed to handle modern aircraft, such as the Boeing 737 Max, and will start functioning with three flights per week right away.

“Today, we formally open the new Negele Borena Geda Airport and Ethiopian Airlines’ 24th domestic route,” said Prime Minister Abiy.

He also mentioned, “Designed to accommodate advanced aircraft such as the Boeing 737 Max, this contemporary facility will promptly initiate three weekly flights to boost local business, cross-border trade, and tourism.”

The leader highlighted the importance of developing transportation networks in order to create regional economic prospects and enhance national cohesion.

“Each new runway we construct bridges a divide, taps into regional economic opportunities, and unites our population more closely,” he remarked.

Prime Minister Abiy also commended Ethiopian Airlines, Africa’s leading and most prosperous airline, as it celebrates its 80th year this year, calling it “the pride of Africa” and “The New Spirit of Africa.”

The opening of the airport is anticipated to boost access to the Borena region, promote economic activities, and open up fresh prospects for investment and tourism, while strengthening links among local communities.
