A representative of the Democratic Party of Korea, Park Jiwon, said on the 28th that securing wins in 13 of the 16 major city mayoral elections during the June 3 local elections would mark a success for the ruling party. Representative Park made remarks about former President Park Geun-hye’s campaign event supporting the People Power Party in Busan, suggesting that it might ultimately help the Democratic Party candidate Ha Jung-woo in the Busan Buk-gap by-election.
During an interview with MBC Radio on the same day, Rep. Park addressed the question, “Can a 13-3 outcome be seen as a win for the Democratic Party?” by stating, “It is still considered a victory.” Rep. Park noted, “At first, I also pointed out that only Gyeongbuk would be challenging and that the Democratic Party would secure 15 to 1 seats,” and added, “In the initial phase, each party makes strong claims to motivate their supporters.” He further said, “Regardless, I will stick to the principle of not getting too confident in golf or elections and will continue to work until the end.”
In response to a question suggesting that a result worse than 13-3 might affect the re-election of party leader Jung Chung-rae, Rep. Park simply said, “Although the outcomes of this local election are significant, it will depend on multiple factors.”
Concerning the campaign support event for former President Park Geun-hye in Busan, Rep. Park stated, “It’s possible that if People Power Party leader Jang Dong-hyeok does not succeed in this local election, former President Park Geun-hye might take over as the party’s leader,” noting, “She holds influence with specific groups.”
Rep. Park noted that in Busan Buk-gap, where independent candidate Han Dong-hoon, People Power Party candidate Park Min-sik, and Democratic Party candidate Ha Jung-woo are competing in a three-way contest, the presence of former President Park might aid candidate Ha Jung-woo. Rep. Park stated, “In Busan Buk-gap, as former President Park is backing candidate Park Min-sik, if votes from Han Dong-hoon move to Park Min-sik, Ha Jung-woo’s victory is assured.”
