The Land Transport Department (DLT) has taken steps to clarify misunderstandings regarding a new rule that would introduce special license plates for electric vehicles (EVs), stating that owners of current EVs will not need to change their existing plates.
The director-general of DLT, Sorapong Paitoonpong, stated that the draft ministerial regulation is still open for public comment and has not yet become legally enforceable.
“The department will not mandate electric vehicles that are already registered to switch to new license plates. Car owners can keep using their current registration plates as usual,” he stated.
The suggestion aims to revise the rules that dictate the dimensions, appearance, and hue of vehicle license plates in order to cater to the increasing number of electric vehicles on Thai roads.
According to the proposal, newly registered private electric vehicles and motorcycles would be issued license plates featuring a reflective blue background. Public service and specially designated EVs would retain their current plate colors but would include a unique identification symbol.
Current electric vehicles, including those with auction plates and standard white-background plates, would not require new plates. Instead, owners would be obligated to include the identification mark within one year after the regulation comes into force.
Mr. Sorapong mentioned that the policy would enable rescue personnel, emergency staff, and other officials to quickly recognize electric vehicles involved in incidents and implement proper protocols for managing high-voltage batteries.
