A bright business student was fatally shot in an unexpected incident while heading to join his parents at a baseball event in Indiana, according to authorities.

Brett Scrogham, 23, was in a parking garage at approximately 6:00 pm on Thursday when he was hit by a bullet, according to the IndianapolisMetropolitan Police Department (IMPD) said.

Scrogham, who was mere moments away from watching an Indianapolis Indians game at Victory Field, was discovered with a gunshot injury upon the arrival of police.

The young man was rushed to a nearby hospital in a critical state. He was declared dead on Saturday.

A person whose identity is unknown was taken into custody and then let go at the location where the shooting occurred, according to the police.

Authorities are asking people to provide information if they have any details about the fatal shooting, which is still being looked into.

Scrogham recently completed his studies at the IU Kelley School of Business, where he ranked among the Top 100 students, as reported by aGoFundMe page.

Messages of condolence were received after Scrogham’s passing, including one from Robyn Collier, who mentioned that he saved her dogs during a home fire.

‘We are all deeply saddened and grieving for his family,’ Collier said.Fox 59.

“We simply can’t comprehend what’s happening in the world right now; it needs more people like Bretts. We don’t need more violence,” she added.

A close friend and fellow student of Scrogham, James Wilson, stated that he was a proud and accomplished student.

“Having him in the top 100, securing that was highly impressive, and he was very pleased to achieve it,” Wilson said to the outlet.

He might have envisioned putting money into his own low-income housing and rental properties, possibly constructing some apartments or similar developments.

After his passing, Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett issued a statement saying: ‘Today, I am saddened by the news of a victim of last week’s unexpected act of violence.’

Acts of violence within our community are not tolerable – particularly when they result in the death of an innocent individual who is merely appreciating the features that make our city remarkable.

The most recent disaster occurs as violence, criminal activity, and ‘anarchy’ have persisted to trouble the Midwest city in recent years,Indy Star writer Jeffrey Tompkins wrotefollowing Scrogham’s passing.

Tompkins, an urban planner and resident of downtown Indianapolis, stated that the increase in violent disorder has become so uncontrollable that the community now faces two choices: chaos or urbanism.

We must choose one. The cities that Americans idealize, such as Tokyo, Paris, and New York at its finest, are not secure because their inhabitants are kinder individuals,” Tompkins wrote. “Quite the opposite. They are safe because crime is not anticipated.

He continued by discussing other recent incidents that resulted in the deaths, injuries, or extreme fear among innocent individuals, such as when career offender Demarcus McCloud, 46, ignited an IndyGo Red Line bus on April 24, 2024.

Fortunately, no fatalities occurred when a quick-witted bus operator stopped the vehicle and safely evacuated all passengers.

McCloud was incarcerated in the county jail over 46 times prior to causing turmoil in the city.

In July 2025, McCloud received an eight-year federal prison sentence following a guilty plea to two charges of willful destruction of property that received federal funding and one charge of damaging federal property, as reported by the Department of Justice (DOJ).

The writer also referenced the passing of Brandon Breedlove, a former Air Force member who was struck and killed by an intoxicated driver in March 2024.

The driver, Salvador Banales, received a five-and-a-half-year prison sentence, followed by four years of probation — but only after an Indiana judge allowed him to return to his home state of Texas until his trial.

The choice was finalized on the same day that Breedlove’s organs were given to others.

Banales received a prison term of five and a half years for causing Breedlove’s death in March 2025.

The Daily Mail reached out to the IMPD for a statement.
