Addis Ababa, June 1, 2026 —The Ethiopian Human Rights Commission (EHRC) has stated that it has not detected any breaches of human rights so far in the course of Ethiopia’s 7th General Election, as millions of people keep voting throughout the nation.
Ethiopia is conducting its 7th General Election, with over 54 million registered voters taking part in selecting members of the House of People’s Representatives and regional state councils.
Voting booths across the nation commenced operations at 6:00 a.m., signifying the beginning of an election seen as a crucial step forward in the country’s democratic development.
As per its constitutional responsibility, the EHRC is carrying out country-wide evaluation of the voting procedure to examine the circumstances of voting and guarantee the safeguarding of voters’ rights on Election Day.
A team responsible for monitoring, headed by EHRC’s Chief Commissioner Berhanu Adelo, went to polling stations in Arba Minch and Jimma to oversee the election process and check adherence to electoral and human rights norms.
Following the visits, Chief Commissioner Berhanu Adelo mentioned that voters, including women, men, and individuals with disabilities, were able to reach polling stations without any barriers and take part in the voting process freely.
As stated by the Chief Commissioner, the current findings suggest that the election was carried out in line with relevant electoral regulations and human rights standards.
He mentioned that polling stations started on time at 6:00 a.m., with voters, election workers, and monitors present as the voting process began.
The Commission also stated that the voting process has continued to be peaceful, structured, and efficiently managed, with no recorded human rights abuses so far.
The Chief Commissioner highlighted that EHRC teams are overseeing the election in 175 constituencies and over 2,700 voting stations throughout the country.
The Commission also highlighted that issues related to elections are being monitored via a specific complaint-tracking system set up to handle any concerns that might occur throughout the voting process.
The EHRC highlighted its commitment to monitoring both the events on election day and the subsequent period to guarantee that human rights are upheld and safeguarded during the entire electoral process.
With voting taking place across the country, a high number of voters at numerous polling stations indicates significant public involvement in determining the nation’s future via the voting process, ENA has found out.
