A team associated with an unlawful “private relay center” that concealed foreign phishing call numbers as local South Korean mobile numbers (beginning with “010”) has been taken into custody by authorities.
The Paju Police Station in Gyeonggi province reported on the 17th that it has detained a man in his 30s, believed to be the leader of a private relay center, along with five others, including a manager, for alleged violations of the Telecommunications Business Act.
As per the police, A and his collaborators are accused of running the private relay center from early September last year until February 28 this year, setting up bases in Paju and Incheon.
They were discovered to have partnered with foreign phishing groups and utilized communication devices to modify the caller ID of incoming calls to appear as if they are from South Korean numbers beginning with “010.”
The group was paid by phishing organizations for providing this service. The illegal earnings uncovered by the police via account tracking total 1.182 billion South Korean won.
Furthermore, authorities confiscated more than 700 mobile phones, laptops, Wi-Fi routers, and additional communication tools involved in the criminal activities.
A law enforcement representative said, “We will address voice phishing incidents firmly in accordance with a no-lenience policy.”
