The police carried out an inquiry into the Shinsegae Group on the 17th, considering it as a witness in relation to the dispute surrounding Starbucks Korea’s ‘Tank Day’ promotion.

The Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency’s Public Crime Investigation Unit mentioned that they have been examining Yang Jong-wan, the head of the audit team (executive) at Shinsegae Group, as a person of interest since that morning.

Mr. Yang was the person who directly presented the findings of the internal inquiry during the release of the fact-finding report, which occurred following Chairman Chung Yong-jin of Shinsegae Group’s public apology on the 26th of last month.

At that time, the Shinsegae Group mentioned that they carried out an investigation of the e-commerce team, strategic planning department, the CEO, and the approval process at Starbucks Korea, yet could not find proof of deliberate misconduct.

Nevertheless, they also pointed out that there were constraints in verifying the discussion details from the early planning phase because some staff members declined to hand over their mobile devices and the retention period for internal messaging platforms had ended.

The authorities are anticipated to concentrate on examining the unresolved issues identified by Shinsegae Group’s internal audit throughout this inquiry to assess if legal charges can be filed.

It has been reported that the police are also looking into obtaining data from employees’ mobile devices, which the Shinsegae Group was unable to acquire, via upcoming search and seizure processes.
