Prime Minister Donald Tusk stated that the Lublin police have detained a suspect in connection with the fatal shooting of a Russian national and prominent artist named Semyon Skrepetsky. He mentioned that authorities are still searching for the “mastermind.”

What did Tusk comment on regarding the arrest that took place on Thursday?

Tusk mentioned that law enforcement and Poland’s Internal Security Agency (ABW) worked together during the arrest.

He mentioned that the suspect was carrying a Georgian passport, and that ongoing investigations were aimed at determining the origin of the orders for the assassination.

The arrest on Thursday follows the detention of two other Belarusian individuals, who have not been formally charged.

Authorities stated that the victim, known as Robert Kuzovkov and possibly more recognized under his artistic name Semyon Skrepetski, was murdered on Tuesday in Biala Podlaska — a town located east of Warsaw, close to the Ukrainian border.

He received five gunshot wounds, one to the head. The attacker shot him down and then moved in to fire two more shots at close range.

Earlier on Thursday, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Wladyslaw Bartoszewski stated to Radio Zet that Chechens were “also potentially suspected,” considering the artist’s previous criticism of their leaders.

Who was Semyon Skrepetski?

Skrepetsky was an artist known for his bold caricatures of Putin, as well as Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko, Chechen leaderRamzan Kadyrovand Soviet leader Joseph Stalin.

However, he also directed his satire at the Russian opposition, including through caricatures of Alexei Navalny.

Born in a village located within Russia’s Altai Republic, Skrepetsky has been residing in exile in Poland since 2021. The Polish government has stated that they previously provided him with a security detail, which he turned down.

Three days prior to his murder, the artist had visited Berlin on Russia Day.

In Berlin, he organized a demonstration in front of the Russian embassy, displaying a caricature resembling an icon that depicted both Stalin and Putin.
