A demonstration occurred close to European Union institutions, gathering activists, advocates for human rights, and individuals from a recent flotilla heading to Gaza. Attendees contended that the union should leverage its economic power to exert more pressure on Israel against the backdrop of ongoing conflicts related to the Gaza war and the growth of settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories.

The event was coordinated by the human rights organization Avaaz and featured Swedish environmental activist Greta Thunberg. Demonstrators held placards with messages like “EU, stop purchasing what Israel takes” and called for limitations on imports including dates, avocados, and other agricultural goods from settlement areas.

Pascal Vollenweider from Avaaz stated that the European market provides the EU with considerable influence over Israeli policies. Among the speakers was Arno Meyns, a participant in the flotilla, who mentioned he was detained by Israeli forces during a sea mission last month.

The event was a component of a larger initiative aimed at promoting increased European involvement before EU leaders met in Brussels on June 18.
