The streets of Manhattan are in turmoil and fans have required medical assistance as theNew York Knicks prepare to celebrate their NBAvictory in the championship accompanied by a parade on Thursday morning.
Thousands of supporters spent the night on the streets to secure prime viewing positions, while millions more are arriving in the city to catch a sight of Jalen Brunson, Karl-Anthony Towns, and their fellow stars.
This led to chaos and disarray in the streets, with crowds of fans fighting to secure any available spot, while others described a terrible absence of coordination and contradictory details from the police.
The video depicted restless fans engaged in arguments and large groups stuck with no place to go. Another picture showed that the police had arrested an individual.
Additional pictures posted on social media depicted a male supporter being given medical aid by paramedics on the street, while others mentioned individuals ‘fainting’ as they queued for the parade.
The NYPD stated that by 7:30am, all viewing areas were completely filled and there was no additional space available after only 90 minutes. However, video shared on social media depicted fans rushing past a police barrier and then dashing toward the parade path.
Certain supporters had to climb onto cars, refuse trucks, and streetlight posts in an attempt to catch a view of the procession.
A disaster occurred early on when fans who had gathered at one of the entrances listed on Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s website were informed it was a “misunderstanding” and would not be opened. “Open the damn gate. The gate is supposed to open at six,” a man was heard yelling.

The NYPD also stated that subway services would no longer halt south of Canal Street, where the parade was occurring, whilevehicle movement was restricted starting at 7 a.m.
The Knicks’ impressive playoff journey, which concluded with a 4-1 victory against the formidable Victor Wembanyama and theSan Antonio Spurshas energized the city in recent weeks.
Mamdani has forecasted that Thursday’s event, scheduled to begin at 10am ET, could be “the biggest parade in”New York Cityhistory as fans honor the team’s first championship since 1973.
“Performances will take place, there will be New Yorkers, there will be the team, and there will be history,” the mayor stated on Monday.
The gathering will begin close to Battery Park and proceed along Broadway through the city’s ‘Canyon of Heroes’ and finish at City Hall, where Mamdani intends to present the players with the keys to the city.
The police intend to assign 10,000 officers to ensure safety at the event, which comes after enthusiastic but occasionally disorderly street festivities that were disrupted by violence during the Knicks’ matchup against the Spurs.
We hope people will appreciate this moment,” police commissioner Jessica Tisch mentioned during a planning meeting on Wednesday, “but ensuring public safety is the top priority.
Throughout the city, law enforcement officers were sent in to control the chaos following the Knicks’ victory on Saturday night, with footage capturing the celebration turning violent in Times Square as fans physically tore apart a school bus while the driver pleaded with them to cease.
Around 2am, a 17-year-old male was injured by a gunshot to his left foot at the intersection of 42nd Street and Broadway, as reported by the NYPD. He was transported to Bellevue Hospital in stable condition.
In Brooklyn, a 44-year-old man was fatally shot near Prospect Park at 11:40pm—only minutes after the Knicks secured their victory—but it remains uncertain whether the incident was connected to the team’s celebrations.
In Midtown Manhattan, videos captured police officers clashing with partygoers as thousands of the city’s lively residents flooded the streets.

An NYPD representative stated that they will utilize helicopters, drones, specialized weapons teams, K-9 units, and explosive detection dogs, along with highway patrols, transit police, and an undercover operation.
Over 50 floats and additional vehicles are anticipated to take part, with approximately 650 sanitation employees designated to clear up potentially tens of thousands of pounds of trash, based on past patterns.
Knicks icons Walt ‘Clyde’ Frazier, who was part of the team’s 1970s championship squads, and Patrick Ewing are anticipated to take part in the parade. Mike Breen, the Knicks’ voice on MSG Network, was scheduled to host the event at City Hall.
Alicia Keys, the artist who collaborated with Jay-Z on the unforgettable 2009 track “Empire State of Mind,” has been chosen to perform.
“What else could I have done?” Keys stated on Wednesday in a social media update that showed her talking with Knicks forward OG Anunoby.
The Knicks will experience a first on Thursday with a ticker-tape parade. Previously, when the team won the championship in 1970 and 1973, they did not receive New York’s traditional celebration.
The celebrations on Thursday will mark the 210th parade with confetti in New York, following a similar event for the WNBA’s New York Liberty in 2024.
