“If Putin doesn’t want to end this conflict and prefers to keep it going — we won’t remain silent, we will react,” said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in his remarks regarding Ukraine’s attack on Moscow’s oil refinery on Thursday morning.
“If Ukraine is destroyed, Moscow will also suffer,” Zelenskyy stated.
Ukraine’s president stated that Kyiv’s drone attack on the Moscow oil refinery is Kyiv’s retaliation for Russia’s assault againstthe Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, one of the most significant historical and spiritual emblems of Ukraine.
“We were at the Lavra, and I told them we would prepare a response and you will witness it. I believe you are witnessing it now,” Zelenskyy stated, emphasizing that Kyiv’s sole desire is to conclude Russia’s war.
“We have never desired this conflict, and everyone is aware of that, including our allies,” he stated.
Zelenskyy also emphasized that Moscow’s air defense system — the most advanced and robust in the nation — was unable to stop Ukraine’s drone strike, which he described as “completely justified.”
“As everyone can see, despite the three layers of air defense that Moscow possesses, we have stated that we will strike them,” he said.
The Moscow oil refinery is among the biggest in Russia, providing roughly 40% of the fuel needs in Moscow and most of the region’s gasoline.
It also supplies aviation fuel to all four of Moscow’s main airports and has an annual processing capacity of over 12 million tons of crude oil, as reported by Ukraine’s General Staff.
Speaking to reporters in the presidential WhatsApp group, Zelenskyy also urged for greater pressure on Russia.
He contended that sanctions ought to focus on the nation’s energy sector, auxiliary fleet, oil and gas income, financial institutions, armaments manufacturing, and military industry “so that Russia understands there is no benefit in continuing the conflict.”
The key point is for the Russian population to understand that it is solely one individual, Putin, who is conducting this war, while the people are bearing the consequences.
This is why the pressure on Russian leader Vladimir Putin should increase from Ukraine, Europe, and the United States, Zelenskyy stated.
“It is also time for the Russians to wake up and exert influence on their leader,” he concluded.
