Tennis icon Serena Williamsis officially making a comeback to the singles competition atWimbledonafter obtaining a remarkable wild card spot for the 2026 competition.

On Sunday, the All England Club announced that the 23-time Grand Slam singles champion will make a comeback to the form of tennis she once ruled for many years.

The declaration represents a significant achievement for the 44-year-old, whose most recent professional singles match occurred almost four years back at the 2022 U.S. Open.

Williams had earlier suggested a possible return to the grass courts after starting her competitive tennis revival in the doubles event, where she is already confirmed to play with her sister,Venus Williams

The All England Club had left a women’s singles wildcard spot clearly vacant, and on Sunday it was revealed that Serena will challenge the top players in the world—many of whom are significantly younger—at the tournament where she has triumphed seven times.

The 44-year-old launched her return to tennis – four years after her final professional game – at the Queen’s Club’sHSBCTournaments, in which she secured a stage before being withdrawn due to an injury sustained by her teammate Victoria Mboko.

Before returning at the beginning of the month, Williams stated that she “has nothing to prove” in the next phase of her distinguished career.

I don’t need to win,” she stated. “I’ve already achieved more than most people do in their entire lives, so for me, it’s not significant. It’s crucial for me to keep reminding myself of this because I have nothing to prove, nothing to lose, and everything here is just a game.

Referencing her wish for her children to witness her playing, and indicating that the timing of their school breaks influenced her decision to return at the beginning of the grass court season, Williams mentioned missing the energy of the tour, and wanting to enjoy a ‘new kind of experience’ of its excitement while her family was with her.

This entire trip, I’m not putting any pressure on myself,’ she added. ‘I’ve had enough pressure.

Being an athlete is the greatest role you can have, in the top position, and having the chance to possibly achieve it one final time is thrilling and exciting.

I think I might need to practice a bit more if I aim to play singles, and we’ll see if I reach that point; if not, that’s not where I’m meant to be right now.

Williams was addressing the media before her return match at Queen’s, where she and Mboko secured a 7-6, 6-2 victory over third-seeded Nicole Melichar-Martinez and Erin Routliffe.

I had a lot of fun,” said Serena on the court after winning. “Vicky was really able to support the team during crucial moments. It felt very natural playing with her.

Why did she return? “I didn’t have anything else to do – my children are out of school for the summer, so why not!”

Mboko, only 19 years old and competing alongside her idol, remarked: ‘It’s a great honor to play beside you.’

Williams was observed by her proud family — husband Alexis and children, Olympia and Adira.

Following the All England Club’s 20 per cent increase in prize money, every player receiving a singles wildcard this year will get at least $106,000 (£80,000) — a significant boost for players with lower rankings.

There is expected to be significant excitement for Friday’s draw to determine who Williams will encounter — as an unseeded player, she could face anyone in the bracket, including world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka — and her return to the court will be one of the most notable moments in tennis this year.

According to all reasoning, she should face difficulties. However, for athletes with the extraordinary level of Williams, going against logic is just part of their nature.
