• Canada has made its Express Entry requirements more stringent and added new occupational categories for skilled workers.
  • Individuals who apply in 2026 are required to have 12 months of professional experience in order to be eligible for permanent residency.
  • Although there are stricter regulations, the nation has introduced new priority categories, such as healthcare, STEM fields, and proficiency in French.

Canada has made its Express Entry permanent residency program more selective in 2026, despite introducing new job fields for skilled workers in healthcare, research, transportation, and management.

The Canadian government, through Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), has introduced updates that will be implemented in category-based selection draws this year.

Canada’s new updateincreases the minimum required work experience for applicants to meet the criteria within a specific job category, while also broadening the range of occupations the nation is currently seeking to fill.

Applicants who are applying under an occupational category are now required to demonstrate a minimum of 12 months of full-time work experience, or the equivalent in part-time hours, gained within the last three years, and this experience does not need to be continuous anymore.

This supersedes the prior six-month limit, indicating that certain applicants who would have been eligible last year might not satisfy the updated criteria.

New focuses for Canada’s 2026 Express Entry

Although there are more rigorous standards, Canada launched several new priority categories for 2026.

10 categories that will be given top priority in Express Entry 2026 priority categories are:

  1. French language proficiency
  2. Healthcare and Social Services — 37 qualifying positions
  3. STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) — 11 qualifying positions
  4. Commercial jobs — 25 qualifying positions
  5. Education – 5 qualifying jobs
  6. Transportation – 4 qualifying jobs
  7. Physicians who have worked in Canada — 3 qualifying positions
  8. Senior managers who have worked in Canada — 4 qualifying positions
  9. Canadian-trained researchers — 2 qualifying positions
  10. Experienced military trainees — 3 suitable job roles

Occupations in agriculture and the agri-food sector, which appeared on the 2025 list, have been completely removed.

The significance of Canada’s 2026 Express Entry policies

The modifications are part of Canada’s larger effort to maintain total immigration at what officials refer to as manageable levels, while continuing to attract skilled workers. The government has stated its aim to keep the number of new permanent residents below 1% of Canada’s population after 2027, and to reduce the proportion of temporary residents to 5% of the population by the end of 2026.

For those considering applying, the message has two aspects: an increased number of job categories now provide a quicker path to permanent residency, yet applicants must have a more extended and stable work history to be eligible compared to the previous year.
