A non-governmental organization (NGO) called “Hamkkehamyeon Sarangbat” is seeking support and involvement from companies and individuals to provide cooling items for the summer months.

Because of the climate crisis, heatwaves are becoming more severe and lasting longer, causing worries regarding the well-being and security of households that struggle with energy access, such as those with low incomes, elderly individuals living alone, and people with disabilities. Despite owning cooling equipment, these families frequently encounter challenges in properly cooling their homes because of high electricity expenses or old housing conditions, resulting in ongoing dangers from heatwave-related issues.

As per the “2025 Heat-Related Illness Emergency Room Surveillance System” report by the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency, individuals aged 65 and above made up 30.1% of all patients suffering from heat-related illnesses. The rate of reported cases per 100,000 people was also highest among those in their 80s and beyond. This highlights the increasing importance of safeguarding and assisting at-risk populations during periods of extreme heat.

◇ Enhancing the Energy Welfare Security System via the ‘Seoul Energy Plus’ Initiative

Hamkkehamyeon Sarangbat is working with the Seoul Metropolitan Government on the “Seoul Energy Plus” project, proactively addressing heatwave issues. This energy welfare program seeks to assist energy-insecure groups and promote climate crisis mitigation efforts through involvement from citizens and businesses.

If you’re looking for summer cooling essentials like cooling bedding and fans, Sarangbat offers them, while collaborating with local welfare organizations to locate households at risk during heatwaves. This enhances community-driven energy welfare support systems.

Furthermore, the organization is conducting a heatwave response fundraising initiative via Kakao’s social contribution platform “Kakao Together Value,” enabling members of the public to engage directly in resource sharing. Contributions gathered will be utilized to provide cooling equipment and enhance living conditions.

◇ Broadening the Scope from Heatwave Management to Enhance Quality of Life

This year’s initiative goes beyond supplying cooling materials, aiming also to enhance living standards by increasing energy efficiency. In the near term, it provides cooling essentials to avoid harm from heatwaves, whereas in the long run, it seeks to lower cooling expenses and foster safer homes through improved energy efficiency. The final objective is to build a sustainable energy welfare base.

With the start of the heatwave season, the need for cooling supplies is rising quickly. Seniors living by themselves, disabled households, and those with low incomes often avoid using cooling equipment because of the high electricity costs. Additionally, many struggle to get adequate cooling due to old housing conditions.

As a reply, Hamkkehamyeon Sarangbat is increasing its assistance for groups susceptible to heatwaves, in partnership with the Seoul Metropolitan Government. It is also collaborating with companies and organizations to establish a structured energy welfare support system. The group aims to enhance heatwave response efforts by creating various cooperation models leveraging corporate resources and knowledge.

Jeong Yu-jin, the head of Hamkkehamyeon Sarangbat, said, “With heatwaves occurring more often, the need to safeguard and assist those who are energy-vulnerable is increasing.” He further mentioned, “We plan to enhance energy welfare programs in partnership with the Seoul Metropolitan Government and collaborate with companies and local communities to establish a sustainable energy welfare support system.”

Via the “Seoul Energy Plus” initiative, Hamkkehamyeon Sarangbat is advancing assistance for at-risk communities, connecting corporate social responsibility efforts, and carrying out campaigns to tackle the climate emergency. The group aims to broaden multiple energy welfare programs to combat energy disparity and address the climate crisis through collaboration between companies, residents, and government agencies.

Residents who want to assist energy-vulnerable families through Hamkkehamyeon Sarangbat have the option to make recurring or single donations via the organization’s website. Participants in the Seoul Integrated Eco-Mileage program can contribute miles accumulated from energy-saving actions. Additionally, the organization receives donations of heatwave relief items like fans, cooling bedding, bottled water, and cooling arm sleeves from companies and organizations.
