Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) stated this week that the increasing cost of living has turned into a real problem for everyday Americans — and poses a significant political risk for President Donald Trump as the November midterms approach.

CBS News reporter Scott MacFarlane emphasized her remarks, portraying the affordability crisis as “a political burden for Team Trump” that “threatens Republican majorities in November.” MacFarlane provided a video clip of Ocasio-Cortez detailing her perspective on how serious the issue is for the administration.

In the video, Ocasio-Cortez outlined a situation that extends far beyond making minor cuts to family expenses.

This isn’t simply going to the grocery store and purchasing the generic cereal, then making the switch,” she stated. “How do you truly manage when you can’t afford medication, when you can’t afford your housing.

She highlighted the extent of the pressure, referring to it as “a crisis for many individuals” and “a crisis for regular middle-class people.”

When asked if Trump is treating the issue with proper seriousness, Ocasio-Cortez stated that the president is exacerbating the situation instead of working to resolve it.

“They are getting into favorable agreements one after another,” she said.

The comments link the issue of affordability directly to the administration’s economic performance, a domain where Democrats are increasingly viewing Republicans as susceptible. As expenses on groceries, housing, and healthcare continue to impact family finances, the cost of living is becoming a key area of contention before the midterm elections — one that Ocasio-Cortez and other Democrats seem determined to maintain in the spotlight.
