Congressman Mike Levin (D-Calif.) cautioned this week that President Donald Trump has publicly admitted instructing federal prosecutors to look into elections he disagrees with — a claim the legislator stated the president made clearly and even took pride in.

Trump openly informed the nation that he calls federal prosecutors to look into elections when he is unhappy with the results,” Levin wrote, noting that the president “showed off this behavior twice this week.

As per Levin, Trump mentioned contacting a U.S. attorney in California, asking the prosecutor to “do me a favor” and investigate a race where his chosen candidate was in danger of losing.

The congressman then explained why he considers the claim to be unfounded. Levin wrote that there is no proof of fraud in California’s primary, pointing out that even Steve Hilton — the Republican candidate Trump asserts he saved — mentioned he had never heard of any such call. Levin also noted that the top elections official in Los Angeles County stated that no one from the Justice Department had interfered with their process.

Levin credited the slow count not to any fraudulent activity but to the meticulous nature of California’s voting process, in which each registered voter receives a ballot by mail, each returned ballot has its signature verified against the voter’s records, and any mail ballots arriving late are still considered valid if they are postmarked on Election Day.

“Deliberate is not deceit,” he wrote.

Levin stated he would back lawful initiatives aimed at accelerating the vote tally by increasing financial support and updating ballot handling procedures. However, he maintained that he would not endorse a president attempting to influence the result through investigation.

The congressman connected the actions to 2020, stating that since Trump has yet to acknowledge his defeat that year, “any election he disapproves of turns into a crime in his view.” The statement was shared by political scientist Norman Ornstein.
