The names of the local offices of the National Police Agency, which are in charge of public safety in Gwangju and South Jeolla Province, will be updated according to the creation of the Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City. Nevertheless, the police structure and responsibilities will continue to be distinct, just as they are currently.
As per the National Police Agency on the 28th, upon the launch of the Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City on July 1, the current ‘Gwangju Metropolitan City National Police Agency’ will be renamed to ‘Gwangju Metropolitan Police Agency,’ while the ‘South Jeolla Province National Police Agency’ will change its name to ‘Jeonnam Provincial Police Agency.’ Both agencies will carry out subsequent actions, including updating official seals and logos, in line with the new names.
This alteration was implemented due to the administrative unification resulting in the elimination of the current metropolitan local government titles, ‘Gwangju Metropolitan City’ and ‘South Jeolla Province.’ A police representative mentioned, “The Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special Act and the functioning of police units are separate matters,” noting, “The decision to change the name was made purely because of the lost designations.”
As a result, the structure, responsibilities, and operations of the autonomous police committees will remain independently managed at the city and provincial levels under the National Police Agency Act. This is comparable to the way Gyeonggi Province, a single metropolitan administrative area, operates two separate local units of the National Police Agency for its southern and northern regions. The Gwangju and South Jeolla police forces, which were previously managed as one entity (South Jeolla Provincial National Police Agency), have been divided since July 2007 following the administrative reorganization of the city and province, and have continued with this arrangement ever since.
Meanwhile, no other government agencies are planning to move or alter their names after the introduction of the integrated special city. It is understood that regional-level organizations, such as the Honam regional courts and prosecution offices, which cover not only Gwangju and South Jeolla but also North Jeolla and Jeju, along with the regional weather service, employment and labor bureau, and environmental office, will keep their existing names and have no intentions of reorganizing.
