President Lee Jae Myung has consistently denied the allegations made by the People Power Party (PPP) concerning his proposal to create a new semiconductor hub in the Honam area.

On June 27, the president shared on X (formerly Twitter), saying, “This issue was already officially verified by the PPP government when President Yoon Suk-yeol of the People Power Party was in office in 2023,” and mentioned, “I ask the PPP lawmakers to avoid making unusual comments regarding the semiconductor industry’s presence in Honam.”

President Lee also shared an article titled, ‘The Yoon Administration’s ‘Exclusion of Honam’ but Gwangju and Jeonnam Resurge as Semiconductor Special Zones.’ The piece outlines how Gwangju and Jeonnam were awarded the top score in the 2023 national advanced strategic industry competition organized by the Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Resources.

He emphasized that the area was considered a prime site for achieving RE100—a necessary condition for major global technology firms—due to its ample industrial water supply systems, such as the nearby Jangseongho and Damyangho, along with the solar and wind power facilities in the Honam region. Nevertheless, Gwangju and Jeonnam were eventually not chosen, and instead, Yongin·Pyeongtaek in Gyeonggi and Gumi in North Gyeongsang were selected as semiconductor-focused zones.

Previously, when certain individuals, including the PPP, expressed worries regarding water scarcity in the Honam region, President Lee personally denied these claims, asserting, “The Honam region has just as much water as the Yeongnam region or the capital area.”
