June 27, 2026 (ABU QAMRA) – Sudanese military units collaborating with the army regained control of the town of Abu Qamra in North Darfur on Saturday, after intense fighting with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
The town, situated in the far northwest of the state, was captured by the RSF towards the end of last year following fierce fighting that pushed the joint forces back to the Tine region. Activists had earlier alleged that the RSF carried out ethnic-based abuses against individuals from the Zaghawa tribe during this time.
The official representative, Wakil Mutawakil, stated in a press release that the combined forces, in cooperation with the Sudanese Armed Forces and local resistance groups, fully captured Abu Qamra following intense combat that continued from early morning until Saturday night.
The operation caused significant casualties and damage to the RSF’s personnel and equipment, with multiple combat vehicles destroyed or captured, while the remaining RSF fighters retreated from the area, Wakil stated.
In addition, the North Darfur Emergency Rooms Coordination Council expressed concerns over worsening humanitarian situations in Miski, a secluded town close to the Chadian border, after a surge in displacement from the Um Baru area caused by RSF attacks.
In the last two weeks, the RSF destroyed around eight villages in Um Baru, causing thousands of people to flee towards Chad.
Emergency rooms reported that affected families, especially women and children, are residing outdoors without protection, clean water, or sanitation items, cautioning that conditions may deteriorate as the rainy season approaches.
