• Two brothers charged with stealing $600,000 from an 88-year-old man
  • Pretended to be employees of the Commonwealth Bank

The firm providing uniforms for Australia’s Commonwealth Games has removed promotional images of a model alleged to have stolen over $600,000 from an elderly man with dementia.

Siblings George Mensah, 22, and Jesse Mensah, 25, were taken into custody at a facility inSydneylast week in the south-west following a prolonged inquiry by theNSW State Crime Command’s Financial Crimes Squad.

Authorities claim the siblings carried out a scheme involving making cold calls to possible targets until they connected with an 88-year-old man from Paddington in the eastern part of the city last year.

The Mensah family are accused of pretending to beCommonwealth Bankstaff members during calls that extended for as long as 90 minutes and persuaded the man to provide them with access to his online account and credit card.

Throughout the year, they are accused of taking the man’s entire life savings and spending over $600,000 on stock purchases and transferring money to themselves and others.

George Mensah faced two charges of deceitfully gaining financial benefit and intentionally handling funds derived from illegal activities.

Jesse Mensah faced charges including deceitfully gaining financial benefit through false means, intentionally handling funds derived from criminal activity, and not adhering to a directive regarding access to digital evidence.

The Daily Mail has learned that George Mensah is a sprinter and model who, until Monday afternoon, was part of an advertising campaign for Valour Sport, showcasing the uniforms that Australian athletes will wear at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow later this month.

Images of Mensah on Valour’s website were removed following inquiries from the Daily Mail regarding his involvement in promoting the company’s role in supplying uniforms for the team at the Games.

“Valour Sport had no knowledge of the allegations directed at Mr. George Mensah,” the company stated in a release.

The image of Mr. George Mensah has been taken out of all promotional materials. The allegations are for Mr. George Mensah and the NSW Police to handle.

George Mensah is pursuing a degree in criminology at university, whereas his older brother Jesse works as a youth support specialist.

Renowned lawyer Abdul Saddik informed the Daily Mail that the Mensahs would be contesting the allegations, while authorities stated that their inquiry is still in progress and they are seeking two additional suspects.

“In our opinion, there is a significant fraud occurring behind the scenes that goes beyond what our clients are aware of,” Mr. Saddik stated.

We claim that is the reason the police state this is an active investigation and they are seeking at least two additional individuals who gained from the fraud.

The Borlase Strike Force was created by the Financial Crimes Unit in 2025 to look into the Mensah brothers.

Police carried out a search warrant at a property in Yagoona around 6:10am on July 1, and detained the two individuals with support from officers of the Southwest Metropolitan Regional Enforcement Squad.

Head of the Financial Crimes Unit, Detective Superintendent Gordan Arbinja, characterized the suspected actions of the Mensahs as ‘a shocking violation against a vulnerable individual in our society’.

“I view focusing on vulnerable individuals as the highest form of misconduct,” said Detective Superintendent Arbinja.

They only communicated with him via phone, and he was certain he was speaking to his own banking representatives.

They [allegedly] took advantage of his weaknesses, but I am certain this was a deliberate and socially manipulated attack on the victim.

This individual was [supposedly] entirely taken advantage of and left with nothing.

Detective Superintendent Arbinja praised the Commonwealth Bank for refunding the full amount that the elderly man had lost.

He mentioned that authorities acted quickly after they detected the suspected unusual activity in the man’s banking records.

“This is an older individual who depended on others for assistance, yet he was reportedly taken advantage of for monetary benefit,” he stated.

Our investigators carefully followed the movement of money and assembled the supposed misconduct.

If you believe a family member is being influenced or coerced into giving away money or account access, please report it.

We would prefer to investigate an issue early rather than witness another person losing their life savings.

The Mensah family was accompanied by Mr. Saddik during their appearance before Acting Judge John Favretto in Bail Court Division 7 on Thursday afternoon.

Mr. Saddik informed the Daily Mail that his clients have ‘flawless records’ and that the claims made by the police against them ‘simply do not add up’.

These are two fine fellows,” he said. “I understand that at first glance they don’t appear to be very good fellows.

Fraudulently taking the full life savings of an 88-year-old man at the end of his life, as he battles dementia, is a deeply disturbing act. However, every situation has multiple perspectives, and this case is no exception.

The siblings were released on bail under the same terms, except for the requirement that they reside at distinct specified locations.

Each person was required to identify one suitable individual to enter into a contract, under which they would lose $100,000 if they failed to meet the requirements.

They had to report twice daily to the police, hand over their passports, stay within NSW, and avoid being within 500 meters of any international departure location.

The brothers are prohibited from communicating with one another or any prosecution witness, except via their attorneys. They may own only a single mobile phone, and this device must not have any encrypted messaging applications installed.

They are not permitted to have more than $2,000 in total value of currency on their person, at their residence, or in the single bank account each individual is authorized to maintain.

They are allowed to depart from their home only to go to the police, attend legal meetings, visit a doctor, or in case of a medical emergency.

Each of them is required to go to their front door when instructed by a police officer and surrender their phone along with any necessary passwords and PINS.

The Mensah family is scheduled to appear at Burwood Local Court on August 12.
