A cherished father sadly passed away inMichiganswimming across a lake at a campsite with his young son.

Christopher Malone, 42, was recognized as the ‘dedicated’ father who passed away on Thursday following a swim across a lake at Campgrounds-R-Us in Owosso Township alongside his eight-year-old son.

A man nearby heard cries around 5pm as Malone and his son fought against the waters of the campground lake.

Lieutenant Keith Hansen of Shiawassee County statedThe Argus-Pressthat the adjacent camper attempted to rescue both swimmers but was only able to get the boy to the beach.

“They had traveled roughly half the distance when they couldn’t complete the swim and began shouting for assistance,” Hansen said.

Approximately 20 minutes after being in the water on the lake’s western side, Malone was discovered unresponsive while emergency personnel worked to provide life-saving assistance,WILX reported. 

He was subsequently taken to a hospital, where he was declared deceased.

Although investigators do not think drugs or alcohol played a role in the drowning, law enforcement informed News 10 that no life jackets were utilized.

Malone was also reportedly out of the designated safe swimming zone at the lake, as stated by the source.

A charity event for Malone’s family was organized by his wife Tabatha’s cousin.

According to the SupportNow, Malone was trying to keep his son from sinking during the heartbreaking drowning.

“He was a committed husband and father who had fully transformed his life in recent years,” the family stated on the fundraising page.

He showed kindness, compassion, and was always ready to assist others. His wife and children were the core of his life.
