The Moroccan embassy in Paris “firmly denounces” the public disrespect of Morocco’s national flag after events took place on the evening of July 4, 2026, in Aubervilliers, Paris, following the 2026 FIFA World Cup game between Morocco and Canada.
The identities of those involved are still being looked into, although the embassy stated that the individuals, featured in social media videos that have spread widely, seemed to claim they were from Algeria due to the slogans they shouted.
The embassy condemned what it referred to as a significant and unacceptable disrespect toward Morocco’s national flag, labeling it an assault on one of the nation’s most important emblems of independence and cohesion.
The embassy stated that the action deeply offended Moroccan citizens residing in France, as well as everyone who upholds the principles of respect, dignity, and peaceful coexistence. It further noted that “no situation could justify this intentional act of provocation aimed at inciting hatred and disturbing public order.”
The embassy also commented on the online video that features women wearing the Moroccan jersey while their children face verbal harassment and threats from a group of people. It mentioned that they have reported these incidents to the French authorities to ensure that those involved are held responsible according to French law.
The embassy subsequently expressed gratitude to the French authorities, security agencies, and the Aubervilliers Municipal Council for their collaboration. It also commended the Moroccan community in France for showing a “strong sense of responsibility during the incidents and staying true to the values of respect and brotherhood that define the relationship between Morocco and France.”
The embassy stated that “Celebrations of sports should always be times of happiness, unity, and mutual respect, and they must never be used, distorted, or taken advantage of as an excuse for insults, provocations, verbal aggression, destruction, or harmful actions directed at a specific group, nationality, or the symbols of any country.”
