The Kano State Police Command has seized 72 vehicles for breaching license plate rules as part of a new operation named “Operation Clean Plates.”
The Police Commissioner in Kano, Ibrahim Bakori, revealed this on Monday at a press conference held at the Motor Traffic Division office located on BUK Road in Kano.
Bakori stated that the operation focuses on vehicles with obscured, altered, or missing license plates, which he referred to as an escalating security concern throughout the state.
“This is not a small traffic violation. It is a conscious effort to remain hidden. Offenders utilize these vehicles to carry out crimes and avoid being identified,” he stated.
He mentioned that the command had previously conducted wide-ranging public awareness campaigns via radio, television, and online platforms before initiating the operation.
“We provided sufficient warning so that no one could argue they didn’t know. Car owners were reminded of their duty to maintain correct registration and display license plates clearly,” he said.
As per the police chief, the operation is currently taking place throughout all 44 local government areas in Kano State.
“Up to now, we have seized 72 motor vehicles that were breaking the rules. They have been taken into custody, and the drivers will be charged,” Bakori stated.
He further disclosed that three more vehicles were stopped under questionable conditions, with passengers failing to provide convincing accounts.
“The individuals and the vehicles are currently undergoing processing for additional inquiry. We will make sure that the legal process is followed completely,” he stated.
Bakori informed the locals that the initiative is intended to enhance community security, rather than cause distress.
“This activity is not related to harassment. It focuses on safety. It aims to make sure that each vehicle on our roads can be recognized and tracked,” he stated.
He requested car owners to follow the law by repairing standard license plates and eliminating any blockage right away.

The commissioner also urged locals to work with law enforcement and notify authorities of any inappropriate behavior.
“We will not tolerate misconduct. The public is encouraged to report any instance of unprofessional behavior by our staff,” he added.
Bakori emphasized the command’s dedication to intelligence-based policing under the direction of the Inspector-General of Police.
He stated, ‘The operation will keep going until complete adherence is reached.’
