The Duke of Sussex was greeted by passionate advocates of his Invictus Games upon his arrival at the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham.

But he was not accompanied by his wife Meghan, who was initially scheduled to be here, but nowwill not be attending any public events in the UK this week.

The prince’s return to the UK has been turbulent, during a week that was intended to support the Invictus Games for injured military personnel.

Rather, it has been overshadowed by his legal loss to Associated Newspapers and uncertainty regarding whether Meghan and their children will be visiting the UK.

Prince Harry’s visit to the NEC is part of an event that celebrates the countdown to the Invictus Games, set to take place in Birmingham next year.

He is observing a demonstration of the games set to take place at Invictus, featuring wheelchair rugby and pickleball, a sport that merges elements of tennis, table tennis, and badminton.

Prince Harry gave pickleball a try, participating in a doubles match, observed by athletes, their families, advocates, and a group of media cameras.

These games for injured military veterans, along with the motivating tales of participants, hold a special place in Prince Harry’s heart, as he has dedicated himself to advancing this as a global event.

However, his return to the UK this week has been marked by disorder and last-minute adjustments.

Two weeks prior, information about the visit was released, stating that Meghan would be attending functions in London and Birmingham, marking her initial appearance in the UK since 2022.

However, following a disagreement regarding security measures, Meghan withdrew from events in London — though the chance of her attending functions later in the week in Birmingham remained uncertain.

On Thursday, it was subsequently revealed that she would not attend any public events in the UK.

Her representatives are declining to comment on any private discussions, which might suggest that King Charles could still be meeting his grandchildren, Archie and Lilibet, together with Prince Harry and Meghan.

Long before the week of activities commenced, there was uncertainty about whether Prince Harry would remain at Buckingham Palace.

His team had stated that he had accepted an invitation to remain at the Palace, but this was quickly denied by the Palace, which mentioned that Prince Harry had already been informed thathe would not be permitted to remain there.

The initial event on Tuesday, supporting the Invictus Games, had previously beenoverwhelmed by the outcome of Prince Harry’s legal caseagainst Associated Newspapers, where he failed on all his allegations of illegal data collection.

A later event in London was subsequently restricted from media coverage.

On Thursday, the visit appeared to be regaining momentum, as Prince Harry had received aheartwarming greeting at a pediatric hospital in Birmingham.

His group will be optimistic that the gathering at the NEC on Friday, where he is among individuals who have commended his efforts for injured military personnel, will once again shift the attention of the visit back to the Invictus Games.
