A former Nigeria international and previous General Manager of Shooting Stars Sports Club, Oladimeji Lawal, has urged former Super Eagles captain John Obi Mikel to be careful with his critiques of the Nigerian football system and instead use his knowledge to provide actionable solutions,The PUNCH reports.

Mikel has recently spoken out against the management of football in Nigeria, revealing on a podcast featuring former England forward Peter Crouch that he had declined offers to come back and help because he couldn’t collaborate with officials who didn’t align with his goals for developing the sport.

“We don’t have individuals who are knowledgeable about football. They remain in place year after year, making all the decisions. They are unwilling to relinquish their power and the financial benefits they receive,” he said.

There have been calls to return and get involved, but I refused. Those individuals should leave. I am not able to work with people who share the same objective as me, the same goal of enhancing the level of football in Nigeria, because that can be achieved quite simply. The money needs to be directed appropriately.

Speaking to the The PUNCHOn Thursday, Lawal mentioned that a number of former international players have been assigned coaching and administrative roles over the years, only to find out that managing football operations is much more challenging than most people realize.

“In recent years, numerous former international players have been given chances to coach or work as administrators, but ultimately, my view is that it’s simple to drive a car using your mouth. You’ll never be in an accident since you can easily press the brake pedal with your mouth,” Lawal said.

He noted that although many critics were prompt in pointing out issues within the football system, only a small number could offer practical solutions.

“Many critics can spot issues and flaws, but they struggle to provide answers. Podcasts offer a platform to connect with the global audience and share views freely, but when it comes to dealing with real-world challenges, the responsibility feels too big,” he said. The PUNCH.

We are all aware that Nigeria is not flawless, but discussion alone does not resolve issues. Mikel should focus his attention more on the system rather than on Nigerians. This is a nation endowed with numerous talented individuals, yet ultimately, your vision and hard work can turn into an illusion due to systemic problems.

Lawal continued to challenge Mikel’s involvement in the growth of grassroots football after he stopped playing, stating, “I don’t believe Mikel has put any effort into football-related initiatives in Nigeria. I’m not familiar with any football school or facility he has set up, yet he speaks out strongly against others.”

Striking the country that provided you with every chance to succeed is not the wisest path. We genuinely require transformation, yet not through undermining the flag and the nation’s reputation. He has the right to his viewpoint, but he shouldn’t constantly mock the flag. He is welcome to join us, and we should all collaborate by presenting constructive ideas and effective solutions that will elevate Nigerian football to new levels.
