Harry Kane, Kylian Mbappe, Ronaldo, Gary Lineker… Some famous football players have received the Golden Boot prize for being the leading goal scorer at aWorld Cup. Who will add their name to the list this year?

A larger 48-team structure brings additional games, more chances for players, and likely higher scoring compared to earlier World Cup editions.

Here is our list of the 10 most probable candidates to win the Golden Boot at the 2026 World Cup. We will continue to update this regularly with each round of matches, so make sure to check back.

10. Johan Manzambi (NEW) – 3 goals

Vini Jr scores four goals and leaves the tournament, so we need to find someone to take his place.

Label it as a commendation for the rising star. He has performed well, but he isn’t matching the three top contenders on this list.

9. Lamine Yamal (↑1) – 1 goal

The sole genuine celebrity who hasn’t made an impact on the scoring statistics.

Yamal has needed some time to reach his optimal level, being introduced slowly following his hamstring injury.

He found the net just minutes into his debut World Cup appearance and appeared very sharp against Austria, but he didn’t manage to find the back of the net and now trails the top scorers by five goals.

The young person is exceptionally skilled, yet bridging that gap is likely impossible for him as well.

8. Romelu Lukaku (NE) – 3 goals

Despite facing significant criticism, Lukaku’s goal-scoring performance for his national team is truly remarkable.

He made his debut at the 2026 finals against New Zealand, scored a goal in the last 32 victory over Senegal, and found the net in the 4-1 defeat of co-hosts United States.

Spain is next up in a game that Belgium is anticipated to lose. However, you can never completely eliminate him from consideration.

7. Jude Bellingham (NE) – 4 goals

For many years, England have entered major knockout games with the belief that they can emerge victorious. However, importantly, they have not truly believed they could.will win.

Bellingham is something else. Although much was said about the challenges faced by the Three Lions at the Azteca, the midfielder rose to the occasion with two goals.

He had already found the net against Croatia and Panama during the group phase, bringing his total to four in this competition.

Few would dare to oppose him, especially when he’s in such a mood.

6. Mikel Oyarzabal (↑1) – 4 goals

Typically, scoring four goals in four matches would make you the top candidate for the Golden Boot.

Not this year, with the competition being extremely fierce.

Oyarzabal’s two goals against Austria show that Spain is steadily developing in the competition. However, he needs to maintain this performance if Spain is to make a genuine push towards victory.

5. Ousmane Dembele (=) – 5 goals

We find it hard to accept that Dembele didn’t score in either the 2018 or 2022 World Cups, but it’s accurate.

He came alive at the 2026 tournament, scoring in France’s second match against Iraq and thenscoring three goals in the first halfin their third match against Norway.

The two-time Champions League champion had remained low-key in the knockout stages, but found the net for the second goal in the quarter-final victory against Morocco.

Although Dembele might be somewhat outshined by France’s top player further up this ranking, he has demonstrated at PSG that he knows when to deliver his best performance and is beginning to exhibit this with his national team as well.

4. Harry Kane (↓1) – 6 goals

We placed Kane at the top of our pre-tournament rankings, citing the fact that he recently won his second European Golden Boot in three years. A career-high 61 goals across all competitions for Bayern Munich highlights his performance.one of the most remarkable individual goal-scoring seasons in history.

The English team’s leader concluded the season with a hat-trick in a cup final. Thomas Tuchel has all the arrangements in place to bring out the best in their top player, who—according to his own statement—is in peak physical condition as never before.

What we hadn’t anticipated was the completely absurd level of competition he would encounter. He has performed quite well so far, but scoring three goals out of seven players before the quarterfinals is truly incredible.

3. Erling Haaland (↑1) – 7 goals

The Norwegian entered this World Cup following a third Premier League Golden Boot in four years.

He completely dominated UEFA qualifiers, netting 16(!) goals – double the total of any other player – as Norway secured their first World Cup appearance this century with an impressive 100% win record.

Haaland found the net twice in the 4-1 opening match against Iraq and repeated the feat in a back-and-forth win over Senegal, only to be given a rest during the game against France.

Although he has scored goals consistently – his goal-scoring run for Norway now spans 14 matches – we doubted if the underdogs could defeat Brazil, potentially ending his Golden Boot journey early. We were wrong.

We should have considered the Gabriel factor. With this individual in this state, we’re no longer dismissing Norway.

2. Kylian Mbappe (=) – 8 goals

The 2022 Golden Boot recipient is the betting odds-on favorite to win the title again, and it’s easy to understand why.

No individual has claimed the World Cup Golden Boot more than once – and Mbappe stands a strong chance of etching his name into the record books this summer.

Mbappe is France’s leading goal scorer, has consistently performed in major competitions, and is now close to surpassing Klose.

His performance in the match against Sweden was followed by a key penalty in the last 16 game versus Paraguay and another in the semi-finals against Morocco.

He appears to be in peak condition and ready to shatter numerous records this summer, having already achievedthe leading scorer in World Cup knockout matches throughout history.

1. Lionel Messi (=) – 8 goals

The legendary captain of Argentina received the Golden Ball as the best player four years back, and he had also been in contention for the Golden Boot prior to Mbappe’s rapid two-goal performance and the intense events that took place from the 70th minute onwards in the previous World Cup final.

Three goals against Algeria, marking his first World Cup hat-trick, and two against Austria made him the top scorer in the tournament’s history.

Subbing off the bench to net against Jordan was the perfect finish, establishing a new milestone as the first player in World Cup history to find the back of the net in seven straight matches.

The record now holds at nine; his performance against Cape Verde echoed Dennis Bergkamp’s legendary goal from France ’98.

Messi failed to convert a penalty against Egypt, adding to his earlier miss from the spot against Austria, yet he still found the net as Argentina made an incredible comeback.

We were skeptical about Messi – having played in MLS for the past three years, dealing with an injury before the tournament, and now being 39(!) – but he has shown that true talent never fades.
