A local court based in Tudun Wada, Kano State, has found three individuals guilty of hindering members of the Federal Road Safety Corps while they were conducting a standard enforcement activity.

The verdict was revealed in a statement released on Thursday by the Public Education Officer of the FRSC Kano Sector Command, Abdullahi Labaran.

As per the statement, the prisoners — Sani Saidu, Ma’arazu Sani, and Suwedi Muhammad — were taken into custody on July 10 following claims of interfering with FRSC officers during a standard enforcement operation and encouraging civilians to oppose personnel performing their legal responsibilities.

The statement mentioned that the suspects were then transferred to the Nigeria Police Force, Tudun Wada Division, for further inquiry and legal action.

The three accused individuals appeared at the Magistrate Court on July 14, admitting guilt to allegations including criminal conspiracy, hindering public officials in their lawful responsibilities, and assaulting public servants while threatening harm.

“The Court found the three individuals guilty under Sections 96, 148, and 263 of the Penal Code, sentencing each to three weeks in prison or a fine of ₦30,000 for criminal conspiracy; one month in jail or a ₦40,000 penalty for hindering public officials in their lawful duties; and two weeks in custody or a ₦20,000 fine for assaulting public servants and threatening to cause harm,” the statement said.

The court also notified the prisoners of their right to challenge the verdict within 30 days.

In response to the ruling, Sector Commander CC Idris Mohammed Lawal praised the judiciary and the Nigeria Police Force for facilitating the prosecution of the offenders.

He cautioned that individuals who interfere with or attack FRSC officers performing their legal responsibilities would face legal consequences and called on the public to assist road safety authorities.
