The Delta State Administration has announced that it will be receiving 50 Compressed Natural Gas buses in the coming four to five months as part of initiatives to implement a public transportation system throughout the state.
The Transport Commissioner, Mr. Onoriode Agofure, revealed this during a press conference on Thursday, stating that the procurement process has started after Governor Sheriff Oborevwori gave the go-ahead for the project.
Agofure mentioned that the buses would offer residents a more affordable, secure, and pleasant mode of travel for both city-to-city journeys and within the Asaba area.
He stated that the government has already determined the routes the buses will take to provide effective service once the program starts.
He referred to the 50 buses as the initial stage of the project, mentioning that additional buses would be purchased if the effort demonstrates success.
“The approval of the 50 buses will be carried out over a period of four to five months. These vehicles are designed to transport individuals from one location to another, offering an economical, accessible, secure, and pleasant mode of travel within the state,” he stated.
The commissioner mentioned that the government is building contemporary bus stations in Asaba and Warri to aid the implementation of the mass transit system and enhance transportation facilities.
He mentioned that policies and legal structures were also being established to guarantee the program’s continued viability after the present administration.
Agofure highlighted that the project would generate employment opportunities for drivers, ticket staff, cleaners, and vendors working in the terminals, while also stimulating economic growth throughout the state.
He mentioned that while the program would initially concentrate on road transport in mountainous communities, the government intended to expand the service to river regions at a later date.
Additionally, the Director of Vehicle Inspection Services, Engr. Vincent Ehiwario, praised Governor Oborevwori and the Transport Commissioner for advancements in the transportation industry.
He mentioned that the reforms involve automated vehicle inspections, road safety education initiatives, and proposals to examine transportation laws in order to enhance electronic enforcement and upgrade traffic management throughout the state.
