The governor of Plateau State, Caleb Mutfwang, on Thursday called on the Nigerian Army to view the recent wave of killings in Plateau and other conflict-ridden areas of the country as a challenge to Nigeria’s sovereignty, not just a standard peacekeeping task.

Mutfwang placed the call while welcoming the outgoing General Officer Commanding 3 Division, Nigerian Army and Commander of Operation Safe Haven, Major General Folusho Oyinlola, along with his successor, Major General Williams Dangana, at the Government House in Jos.

The leader stated that the security issues affecting Plateau, the North-East, North-West, and North-Central regions necessitate a more resolute military approach.

He stated, “My view on the security issues in Nigeria is that our military should perceive their role not as a peacekeeping entity but as safeguarding the nation’s sovereignty from threats to the state. If we approach it differently, we will be committing a serious error.”

The challenge we face today poses a fundamental threat to Nigeria’s sovereignty. Whether in the North-East, North-West, or North-Central regions, we are encountering individuals seeking to undermine the nation, and we must not permit this to happen.

Mutfwang praised Oyinlola for his management during his 18-month period in office, noting that Plateau achieved both active and non-active security improvements despite ongoing difficulties.

He mentioned that the state has kept drawing in investors and tourists even with reports of instability, partly crediting the military’s actions for the advancements.

“There were challenging times, but we also achieved notable successes, both in terms of direct action and other forms. Without your leadership and dedication, those who aimed to disrupt Plateau would have succeeded,” Mutfwang said.

The leader also pledged his administration’s backing to the new GOC and encouraged him to continue the successes of his predecessor while enhancing ties between civilian and military sectors.

In his comments, Oyinlola mentioned that Plateau made up the majority of his work activities throughout his time in office.

“I can confirm that 95 per cent of my 18 months focused on matters in Plateau State. It felt as though I wasn’t the GOC for the other states,” he stated.

The previous GOC expressed gratitude to the state government for its assistance, calling it essential to the achievements made by the troops, and urged Governor Mutfwang and other involved parties to maintain the same level of collaboration with his replacement.
