Ukraine’s legislative body has named Sergii Koretskyi as the country’s new prime minister, following President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s recent changes in the administration.

Koretskyi, who has been at the helm of the national energy company Naftogaz since May 2025, assumes his position as Ukraine deals with ongoing Russian strikes targeting its energy systems.

Kyiv has stated that getting the nation’s energy infrastructure ready for the upcoming winter is a major concern, as Moscow keeps trying to damage Ukraine’s power grid, causing cities to be without electricity during cold weather.

Defence ministry scandal

Later Thursday, Zelenskyy named Yevhenii Khmara, the leader of Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU), as the acting Minister of Defence.

He further mentioned that he intends to obtain legislative consent for Khmara’s appointment as minister.

After completing the required legal processes, I will ask MPs to back Yevhenii Khmara’s appointment as Ukraine’s Minister of Defence.

Zelenskyy stated that he met with Khmara and talked about a “strategic plan for how Ukraine should keep taking initiative to protect its sovereignty and encourage Russia to participate in diplomatic discussions.”

As stated by Zelenskyy, Khmara has accumulated significant expertise in carrying out advanced strike missions: “This is exactly where our defense initiatives in this conflict should be concentrated.”

The news comes amid Large-scale protest against Zelenskyy’s choice to remove Mykhailo Fedorov from his position as defense minister.

During a press briefing on July 16, Zelenskyy stated that it is correct for Ukrainians to be able to conduct peaceful demonstrations and share their opinions even while the country is engaged in conflict.

Why did Zelenskyy reorganize the cabinet?

Zelenskyy revealed the upcoming reform on July 12, stating that the government required a “reset.”

He mentioned that the reorganization would enable Ukraine to adjust its war strategy, emphasizing energy stability and the nation’s path toward EU membership.

Koretskyi’s selection is regarded as a logical decision considering his background at Naftogaz amid Russia’s efforts to destabilize Ukraine’s energy infrastructure.

With nationwide elections put on hold due to martial law during Moscow’s large-scale conflict, a reorganization is Zelenskyy’s sole practical means of political renewal.

Koretskyi’s new cabinet

In alignment with Kyiv’s objective to quicken its EU accession, Vsevolod Chentsov, who has led Ukraine’s delegation to the European Union since 2021, now serves as deputy prime minister for European integration.

Taras Kachka, who has been in this role up to the present, is set to take Chentsov’s place in Brussels, as reported by Euronews, enabling Kyiv to maintain its most seasoned officials in critical EU integration areas while reassigning their positions.

The foreign minister of Ukraine, a role the president nominates individually, has not yet been confirmed by a vote, but according to Euronews reports, Andrii Sybiha is expected to remain in his position.

Member of parliament Yaroslav Zheleznyak mentioned on Telegram that the new leaders of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Defence might be named during a full session on 18 August.
