Jang Yoon-gi (24), the individual accused of the Jeonnam-Gwangju high school girl murder, was reported on the 16th to have aspired to become a “police officer” during his time in school. The prosecution carried out a profiling study during additional investigations to examine his motivations and antisocial behavior, discovering this detail. The prosecution gathered and analyzed information about his background to gain insight into the psychological and antisocial elements behind the violent act.
The prosecution initially obtained Jang’s academic records from his middle and high school years. It was noted that Jang repeatedly wrote “police officer” in the “future goals” section of his documents during those years. A representative from the prosecution mentioned, “He probably was affected by immediate family members, such as his father and older uncle, who were both police officers.”
How did Jang Yoon-gi, who once aspired to be a police officer, become a sex offender and murderer? Jang was described as quiet and normal during his school days. He grew up in Gwangju, Jeonnam, and graduated from a high school recognized for its academic excellence. A former high school classmate mentioned, “He experienced pressure from his family, including his father, to focus on studies, but he never excelled in academics or sports. He was fairly unremarkable and reserved.” Interestingly, Jang struggled to build good relationships with the opposite sex during his school years and had no notable romantic experiences. He had no previous criminal history.
Rather than continuing with higher education, Jang studied for the firefighter examination. Following advice from his eldest uncle, a police inspector (superintendent) in the Jeonnam area, who told him, “Look for a different job because being a police officer is challenging,” Jang shifted his career goals to become a firefighter. Nevertheless, when his preparation for the firefighter exam did not yield positive results, he abandoned the idea and took on a part-time job at a meat restaurant. A friend noted, “He frequently expressed a desire to open his own restaurant after gaining experience through his part-time work at the meat restaurant.”
The prosecution concluded that Jang probably had skewed views about women for an extended period. A significant piece of evidence was the damaged “real doll (adult doll)” discovered in his studio apartment. When Jang was arrested on May 5, two real dolls in his residence had their chest and neck areas damaged. These dolls were not taken by the police, and three days later, Jang’s father, who is a serving police officer, disposed of them in parts. A source from the prosecution stated, “Taking into account the unusual behavior of cutting out the chest and slicing the neck of the real doll with a knife, the investigation proceeded under the assumption of a sexual crime.”
Psychopathy assessments and evaluations of crimes involving unusual motivations did not show major irregularities. Nevertheless, the prosecution argued that Jang had a fixation on women and abnormal sexual views, supported by his actions before the crime and related evidence. A representative from the prosecution mentioned, “Although we cannot clearly determine a specific motive or catalyst, it seems he led an outwardly normal life while secretly holding an obsession with women and distorted sexual perspectives.”
These conditions were clear from the evidence gathered in the additional investigation. The memory card from Jang’s car black box, obtained by the prosecution, included audio recordings from late 2024 in which Jang stated, “If my life falls apart, I’ll kidnap a high school girl” and “Any woman who crosses my path is pitiful.” Additionally, there was a recording of a junior present at the time who said, “If Jang Yoon-gi lived as he usually spoke, he would already be a sex offender.”
Jang later engaged in real sexual offenses. From October 2023 to July 2025, he worked as a substitute military service employee at a local children’s center in Jeonnam-Gwangju. Nevertheless, in June–July of the prior year, just under a month before his release, he secretly captured images of parts of female middle school students’ bodies, including their thighs, on seven occasions by concealing a mobile phone beneath a table. These images were discovered on a deactivated mobile phone he had at the time of his arrest and came to light during the investigation into the murder of a high school girl.
Jang exhibited intense fixation on a Vietnamese female colleague, A, who worked at the meat restaurant. They met in 2024 and initially grew close, but their relationship deteriorated due to repeated disagreements several months later. After A blocked him on KakaoTalk, he started following her. He then unilaterally sent messages or transferred money to her account without any justification. When A did not respond to his one-sided feelings, Jang went to her house on May 3 and sexually assaulted her, keeping her captive for 12 hours and 50 minutes. This incident took place two days before he killed the high school girl on May 5.
