Pakistan, July 20 — Javed Hashmi, a seasoned politician, along with his three sons-in-law, has been implicated in four cases related to alleged electricity theft, according to information revealed on Saturday.

The initial four information reports (FIRs) were filed at Multan’s Makhdoom Rasheed Police Station on July 17 under Section 462J (interference, misuse, or tampering with an electric meter by a domestic consumer, etc.) of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC).

A separate case was initiated against Hashmi and his sons-in-law Shahid Bahar, Zahid, and Shahzeb, as the electricity meters were registered under their names.

As per the FIRs, they were filed based on the complaint from the Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) of Multan Electric Power Company Limited (Mepco), Mohammad Bilal.

The grievances, worded almost exactly the same, stated that Mepco’s team visited the consumer’s location and discovered that the consumer was “siphoning electricity by adding a loop to the company’s power meter.”

The four electric meters, whose numbers were also mentioned in the FIRs, were confiscated by Mepco.

The FIR filed against Hashmi stated that the alleged electricity theft by him resulted in losses amounting to Rs249,100 for Mepco.

In the same way, other FIRs stated that Mepco suffered losses amounting to Rs248,400 as a result of Shahid Bahar’s actions, an additional Rs245,600 in damages related to Zahid’s meter, and Rs247,600 in losses caused by power theft committed by Shahzeb.

Qasim, the grandson of Hashmi, stated that no members of the family had been taken into custody so far.

On a post shared on X on July 18, Hashmi stated that he and his sons-in-law had been charged in legal proceedings.

“They can arrest me; I wouldn’t even ask for bail,” he wrote, referring to the cases as “allegations.” “I am at home; come and arrest me. I won’t hide or run away,” he added.
