U.S. President Donald Trump and New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, a democratic socialist, are scheduled to be present at the World Cup final between Spain and Argentina on the 19th at 3 p.m. local time in New Jersey, U.S. Trump has previously criticized the growing democratic socialist movement in American politics, referring to it as “communism.”

As reported by the New York Times (NYT) and other sources on the 18th, Trump is set to be seated in the VIP area for the final. Despite the U.S. being a co-host of the FIFA World Cup in North America, Trump has not yet attended any games. U.S. federal officials have given the final a “Level 1” special event classification, meaning it needs significant interagency coordination. The Department of Homeland Security is reportedly sending on-site intelligence units, bomb-sniffing dogs, and aerial security measures. The presidents of Spain and Argentina, New York Governor Kathy Hochul, and New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill are also anticipated to be present.

A prominent member of the democratic socialist movement who is becoming more well-known in the U.S., Mamdani, has also confirmed his participation. Although they have different political views, Trump and Mamdani have not engaged in direct conflict up to now. Nevertheless, their ideological differences are clear. Before the November midterm elections last month, Trump criticized the left’s influence within the Democratic Party’s primary elections, saying, “Communists are losers and a cancer; they need to be removed quickly before they spread.”

This isn’t the first instance where the two have participated in significant sporting events on the same day. Both were present at Game 3 of the NBA Finals featuring the New York Knicks and San Antonio Spurs on the 8th of last month. Trump viewed the match from the owner’s box following an invitation from Knicks owner James Dolan, whereas Mamdani paid 1,000 dollars out of his own pocket to be in the audience. The Knicks, who had been on a winning streak, experienced an unforeseen loss against the Spurs.

Currently, there are no intentions for the two individuals to meet at the location. Trump is set to hand over the trophy to the victorious team together with FIFA President Gianni Infantino.
