England drew backlash for using an early defensive approach against Argentina in the 2026 FIFA World Cup semifinal, a method that resulted in their loss, as U.S. President Donald Trump commented on the debate.
As reported by the UK’s *Independent* on the 18th, President Trump was present at a FIFA event in New York and commented that England’s choice to deploy striker Harry Kane in a defensive position during the semifinal was an error. He stated, “England has a fantastic player, Kane, with whom I’ve played golf,” and noted, “It seemed odd to place their top player in a defensive role after they took the lead.”
England was defeated 1–2 by Argentina in the FIFA World Cup semifinals held in Atlanta, North America, on the 16th. Anthony Gordon netted the first goal in the 10th minute of the second half, but England allowed two consecutive goals in the 40th minute and in stoppage time during the second half.
The team’s decision to bring on more defenders following their lead was highlighted as a crucial reason for their defeat. Thomas Tuchel, the England manager, replaced Gordon with defender Ezri Kansa in the 27th minute of the second half and later brought on defender Nico Orailie in place of midfielder Declan Rice 10 minutes later.
